This precious little baby's name is Roman. In reading Robyn O'Brien's book, "The Unhealthy Truth," I've felt everything from anger, betrayal, sadness, disappointment, guilt and hope. Seeing baby Roman really cements it for me. I cannot let this happen to my son. Here's his story from AllergyKids.com:
Roman Michael Fariello was born a big, healthy baby to a wonderful family - Mom, Dad and big sister Sheridan.
Last December, Roman was diagnosed with a peanut allergy after a reaction to an ice cream dessert he ate with his sister. That day, Roman was covered with hives from head to toe, and today, he carries an epinephrine with him wherever he goes.
Roman will be two years old in October and is fighting for his life. Four months after learning of food allergies, an auto-immune disorder, Roman was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that mainly affects young children and usually starts in the abdomen.
After his diagnosis, Roman had many tests. The doctors informed his family that he had a tumor in his belly and a tumor behind his right eye. The cancer had also spread to his bone marrow. A talented and determined surgeon was able to remove the tumor from Roman’s stomach. The tumor behind his eye is inoperable, so he is undergoing aggressive chemotherapy to shrink the tumor.
Roman has completed six rounds of chemotherapy and countless tests and medicines. The doctors say after Roman’s treatment, he will have a 33% chance of survival.

This is personal. My youngest has eczema, allergies (constant runny noses; cough) and chronic ear infections. I figured it was pollens, but I never thought that it could be a food sensitivity that's causing him to feel this way. That's where the guilt came in. I'm a well-read person, so I am even more disappointed that I did not push books on this topic up to the top of the list.
I don't know what I would do if my sons were in little Roman's position. This is why I want to share more about this book.
70% of our immune system is in our stomachs. Interesting when you think about his allergies, and the development of his neuroblastoma.
This is serious business. My grandmother died from colon cancer, and her sister, my grand-aunt, from pancreatic cancer. I always wish that I could've done more to help, and regret that this information was not out so that they could still be here with us. This is a personal crusade for me.
I will be putting more information as I get over at Fitandchic.wordpress.com. I'm going to be stepping up the game because if I want to do what I can to help.
What bothers me the most in reading this book, is just how much MONEY talks and is valued more than our lives, and the lives of our children. I don't know how these people sleep, much less eat. It just doesn't seem fair.
I feel even more anger because more and more it seems like our kids are being robbed of the carefree childhood we had growing up.
I made my first wholly organic dinner today. We used certified organic basmati rice and certified organic refried beans, and it tasted better than any of the other stuff I have EVER bought. For real, I cannot believe that we were eating that swill.
Big food corporations and pharmaceutical companies work closer than you and I think. They get away with murder, literally, because we as an American collective, refuse to do anything about it. We don't read about it. We like to say, "That won't happen to me." Well when the instances of cancer, asthma and allergies have grown astronomically, we need to be doing a real pause, and thinking about why.
One in three women will get cancer in America. One in four men will get it. Round up two of your friends if you're a woman, and round up three if you are a man. One of you will get cancer according to statistics. That is sobering.
Looking at Stay Puft's beautiful skin, and trying to reverse his latest eczema attack, I am saddened. Giving him his latest round of antibiotics, I feel hurt. I cannot believe that his little body was taxed so much, because of my ignorance. I don't have time for a pity party, because I have to keep it moving. We can "rebuild" him. We can make him stronger. That's exactly what I intend to do.
Our children don't have to be robbed of the luxuries and rights we were afforded growing up. It may cost more, but don't our kids deserve it? Don't we?
If your children are suffering from allergies, please read up and invest in the research. I am not saying to follow Robyn blindly. But you do owe it to yourself and your kids to hear her out. She's cited all of her references, and I've got to say as someone who suffers from two of the 4A diseases (asthma, allergies, ADHD and Autism), she's on to something. Sphere: Related Content

My son has eczema as well as asthma. No none allergies. I try to watch what he eats at home (no dyes, all natural, etc). However, it upsets me how 'studies show' we're overweight and we're unhealthy etc. but, it's so damn expensive to be healthy. To buy organic foods and all natural products is very expensive. We're fat because we're cheap!
I use all natural lotion on my son's skin and he talks all natural vitamins. We don't eat out b/c of all the additives, etc. I may not do a good job with what I eat, but for my kids (especially my son) i try to make sure that they're limited to the chemicals they ingest.
A. Spence,
The more I read, the angrier and sadder I get because I am blaming myself for not working harder. This shit is stopping.
I just read about yellow 5 (tartrazine) which may be the cause to my throat acting up. It's been known to cause throat problems and reactions in asthmatics.
I went to the health food store today, and yeah the prices are bananas, but when I think about the harm I could be doing to my babies if I don't pay up, that money just flies.
I was reading how the dyes in food can cause behavioral issues. I was having issues with his behavior at school and I drastically changed his diet at home to limit (try to complete remove) the dyes from what he eats. I saw a difference his his attention and impulse.
