As you guys know, I've been reading Lawrence Hill's "Someone Knows My Name." It's taken me some time because I'm a book Casanova, and read many at once. However, this has become my exclusive book, and I am almost done.
I am saddened at the turn of events in the book. I don't want to ruin it for you, but I cannot recommend this book ENOUGH. It's a crash course in history, through the eyes of a very strong woman.
In part of the book, the book's heroine Aminata Diallo, also known as Meena in the States, has landed on her master's bad side. In a very difficult part to read, he is about to shave Aminata's head of hair. He tells her that she has wool, not hair.
He tells her to say she has wool on her head, not hair. She does so as she is pregnant and in pain. He reminds her that she has wool for head, and that she can't even do anything to it without his approval.
This folks is what it's all about. This is why I'm natural, aye, this is why many black women are and are going natural.
The idea that our hair is wool is what gave birth to the term nappy in relation to our hair.
Because her master only saw her as an animal, as property, she didn't have hair, she had wool. This helped to justify his treatment of her as less than a human being.
I wanted to share that for my sisters who may be thinking that they may need to go back to the creamy crack, or don't think they should leave it alone to begin with.
I have HAIR, not wool. Do you?
