I read on CNN and The Field Negro about this cop controversy in Philadelphia, and I just had to share my thoughts. Here's some background:
A group of black Philadelphia police officers filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against their department, alleging an online forum geared toward city police is "infested with racist, white supremacist and anti-African-American content."
The suit alleges white officers post on and moderate the privately operated site, Domelights.com, both on and off the job.
Domelights' users "often joke about the racially offensive commentary on the site ... or will mention them in front of black police officers," thus creating "a racially hostile work environment," according to lawyers for the all-black Guardian Civic League, the lead plaintiff in the suit.
A look at the site's forums Friday for racist comments found several possibilities.
Reads one: "In urban areas, it seems [African-Americans] living on welfare in paid for housing is ingrained in their culture as well as fighting. ... Kids, along with adults can't speak proper English or spell at a 3rd grade level, but they can sing among "theyselves" the lyrics to a rap song."
Said another Domelights user of an African-American woman: "She is a classic example of that exact non tax paying, no car insurance driving, bad weave wearing, all the whitey's are racist black women."
The site's tagline is "the voice of the good guys."
"Every time African-Americans do or say something in our city, we get this backlash of cops who think they're anonymous on this Web site -- just racist, nasty, hurtful things about what we do," said Rochelle Bilal, the president of the Guardian Civic League and a 23-year veteran of the force.
I visited the site. It's not really a surprise to me to see this. I've seen such before. I've seen commentary that unequivocally shows, what someone brilliantly called, a "white persecution complex." I love that term, because it's dead on. It's no different than the "black victim complex" or "the race card" that some black folks like to pull when they are wrong, but don't like to admit it.
Does it matter that these people have negative opinions about black folks? Not really. Everybody knows that opinions are like assholes. They are entitled to theirs, and if they base their opinions on stereotypes, propaganda and lack of education, then it's their problem. Google is a powerful tool. If they are too stupid to do the research, then that's a reflection of their intelligence, or the lack thereof.
I highlighted the above comments because I just had to mention those specifically. Let me make myself so clear. I do not like stupid, ignorant dregs on society. I don't care what your race is. Do black folks get the short-end of the stick when it comes to criticism at times? Yes! But trash is trash, and if you are black, white, purple or transparent, you will get it from me. That "it" being honesty. You've seen that on this blog if you've been reading long enough. I don't believe in giving out a pass to anyone, white or black. I do believe in parity. I believe in justice. I believe in equality. So here's my take on the first comment.
Philadelphia's black on black violence is not a joke. It's not a creation from someone's mind. It's bad everywhere, and it's bad there. Black men are still likely to die by each other's hands, if they are not put in jail first. That's the truth. This comment about it being "ingrained" in the culture is pretty much correct. We do not have self-love ingrained right now. It is CLEAR. As a collective, materialism, violence and self-hate are being taught to us at an early age. This is showing. President Obama did not make that speech at the NAACP for nothing. It's true. So I do not classify that first comment above as racist. I call it truth.
When GROWN women cannot formulate an articulate thought because their grammar is so lacking, it's offensive, we have a serious problem.
As for the second comment about the weave wearing "welfare queen," well... Can we all honestly say that we do not know someone like this? That we have never met someone like this? I've met and seen plenty.
(Side Note: I just wanted to say that seeing that "weave wearing" comment grinds my gears. Why? Because I'm not playing when I say that our lack of appreciation for our natural hair SHOWS. We may not want to admit it. But as a collective, we know good and damned well that most black women subdue their kinks because they cannot accept them or themselves. I am putting out there. Flame me if you must, but self-denial is a mother.... And nobody else is drinking that "Oh, I just do this for ease of style" kool-aid either. But then again, I come from the Marcus Garvey school of thought on these things.)
We cannot expect to show our asses in public, and not have anyone say anything about it. We cannot tell people to "shut up" when we have those among us who MISREPRESENT us. We have to make it UNACCEPTABLE for these "elements" to do that. You know how I feel about it. The same broad that had the nerve to say something about my natural twists, is probably the same broad that will say some self-hating comment that will misrepresent us.
Now, in my travels on the site--and believe me it was difficult because the idiocy is DRIPPING all over the place--I saw non-racist comments, but then I saw plenty that were aversively racist, or just flat out racist. Example, someone tried to draw parallels between IR dating and murder of whites. Too bad the idiot failed to see that MURDERS are usually committed by someone you know or love, so it has little, if anything, to do with race. I digress...
What
Domelights.com fails to understand is that there are plenty of GOOD, law-abiding minorities who want justice and peace, who feel betrayed. I certainly would feel that way if my city's department had a website like that. Who the hell am I supposed to call if I'm attacked? Racist, bigoted and biased cops? Why? So I can be beaten for calling in the first place? It's not about race. It's about a lack of trust.
If I'm being beaten by a boyfriend, will they not defend me because of their
bias?
What are WE supposed to think, Domelights.com police officers? Maybe you don't care. That's fine. But why the HELL are you a cop if you don't want to be part of the solution?
My brother told me that several years ago, while walking with a friend, he noticed a syringe out in the open. He felt that maybe someone could be hurt or infected, so they called the cops. The officer shows up (they stayed there to guide him to the syringe), and accuses them of having planted it there. He gives them shit, orders them to sit down, etc. You know what bothered me? My brother doesn't even DRINK. He does not smoke, he hates drugs, and he cannot stand nightclubs. This guy is all about working out. That's his drug (and chicks of course). This piece of trash cop's bias led him to alienate law abiding citizens. I am familiar with law enforcement. I know for a FACT that most times, witnesses are what help a case along. How the hell do you alienate law abiding citizens?
That means you are no longer an asset to your job, and you need to find something else to do.
I GET it. Trust me, I do. I don't like going to anything that remotely looks like it might have too many of my "cousins" (credit to Fresh at
Crunk and Disorderly) who are of the "trouble-making" sort. I like to be around self-loving, self-respecting black folks. Ignorant, mental plantation-dwelling fools is not my cup of tea, so I can only imagine that after x amount of calls, you're probably tired of seeing "fuckery." I would be too if I were a cop.
"Yeah, but white folks are acting up too! Look at the meth addicts!"
I am not giving them a pass, but I refuse to use them as a reason to negate the mistakes of black folks either. That is parity.
A tool is a tool is a tool.
Should black cops go for the lawsuit? I am not sure, only because miseducation and ignorance breeds contempt when it comes to race relations. That's what a very wise
Siditty told me, and I agree with her.
They will just create another blog or forum, keep it private or something, and spew the same thing there. The lawsuit is not attacking the ROOT of the problem. It is barely skimming the surface, and it is lost on the minds of people who do not even know that they are wrong or why.
Instead of suing, how about sitting together and confronting the problem with honesty. People say what they really mean, and put it out there. Not everyone's mind will change, but a few will and that's a hell of lot better than suing the pants off of the ignorant for being ignorant. They're ignorant because they didn't have the foresight to keep an open mind and educate themselves in the first place.
"Am I my brother's keeper?" YES.
